Title |
Images of society in Klondike gold rush narratives: Skookum Jim and the discovery of gold. |
Author |
Cruikshank, Julie |
Summary |
"In August 1896, the discovery of gold on a tributary of the Yukon River triggered the Klondike gold rush. Focusing on the initial "discovery," this article compares written accounts from official gold rush literature with oral accounts passed on by Tagish participants. Instead of assessing the veracity of the different versions, it evaluates the narrative genres shaping both written and oral accounts. The narratives contrast sharply because they reflect conflicting ideas about social organization in the late nineteenth-century frontier society." taken from the provided abstract, p. 20. |
